When Grace Wood first came to The Aspen Effect as a 14-year-old participant in the Ranch Hand Leadership Academy, life suddenly became much more difficult. In 2022, her mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. As a teenager trying to process such overwhelming news, Grace found herself withdrawing from others. She struggled with isolation, buried her emotions, and tried to escape the pain rather than face it.

Everything began to change at the ranch.

Grace describes The Aspen Effect as a place where she found safety, authentic relationships, and hope. Through her mentor and the friendships she built with other youth, she discovered that she didn't have to carry life's burdens alone. Instead of hiding behind superficial conversations, she learned what it meant to be vulnerable with people she trusted. She remembers laughing with her mentor, feeling genuinely supported, and realizing that real connection is one of the greatest sources of healing.

Today, Grace is a student at CU Boulder and continues to draw on the lessons she learned during her years with The Aspen Effect, including serving on our Teen Advisory Board during her high school year. While her family is now facing an even more difficult reality as her mother's cancer has spread, Grace says she is navigating this season with far greater resilience because of what she learned at the ranch.

One practice she still uses regularly is the simple 5-4-3-2-1 grounding exercise she learned at The Aspen Effect: noticing five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. When anxious thoughts begin to take over, this exercise helps bring her back to the present moment.

Grace also credits The Aspen Effect with teaching her the importance of building a "herd." Just as horses rely on one another for protection and strength, she has intentionally surrounded herself with supportive people—family, close friends, college roommates, and especially her mother. Rather than facing life's challenges alone, she now leans into those relationships with honesty and vulnerability.

Finally, Grace says the ranch taught her to slow down, breathe, and stay grounded in nature. Working on horse trails and serving alongside others gave her a new perspective. Instead of getting trapped in fearful thoughts, she learned to find peace in the present moment through service, the outdoors, and meaningful connection.

Stories like Grace's remind us why The Aspen Effect exists. The skills young people learn today don't simply help them through adolescence—they become lifelong tools that build resilience through life's greatest challenges.
